Elevated above a natural gully, the unique land typography of this site allows for a journey like entry and a buffer to the street. The design brief was to create a contemporary design with contextual relevance in its materiality and scale. Two distinct forms nestle together amongst the trees in the North East corner of the site, orientated in a South West direction to engage with the surrounds at the discretion of its occupants. Slate shingles reference traditional vernacular architecture and provide the envelope to the major portion of the house. Punctuated by clean contemporary dormer windows, both materiality and form are in constant tension. Their expression internally mirrors the black metal shrouds externally, drawing your eye to the intentionally framed views. A concrete upstand detail expressed both on the façade and internally, speaks to the scale at which everyday life is lived.
