Half Courtyard House
A sleek sanctuary in the heart of South Yarra, Half Courtyard House is a modest double-storey residence nestled against the verdant backdrop of a local reserve that reflects Telha Clarke's ongoing exploration of contemporary style, local materiality and subtle traditional referencing.
"A composed and restrained residence. Beautifully finished."
The architecture presents as discreetly rugged, taking cues from the surrounding context with reference to solidity and metal detailing. Geometric simplicity to the area's traditional ironwork balconies, reinterpreted here as bronzed framing elements that add subtle material warmth to the clean lines.
The home unfolds as a series of gallery spaces and framed views. Upon arrival at the light filled entertainment zone, the interior space spills into the exterior courtyard, leveraging the dense landscape of the adjacent reserve.
Thoughtfully planned to capture natural light deep into the home, this contemporary residence embodies a pared-back aesthetic that sits quietly in the landscape, emphasising sculptural qualities through minimal detailing throughout.
Deliberately restrained, the interiors hero material tactility, balancing restraint with warmth, layering stones, metals and warm timbers into robust forms. Spatial planning is thoughtful, punctuated with moments of grandeur.
