Hepburn Springs House
Elevated above a natural gully and nestled amongst established vegetation, the Hepburn Springs residence responds to context and embraces the naturally beautiful and challenging environmental conditions of its remote location, outside of Melbourne.
"The contrast in volumes and materials heightens the sense of reveal when one moves through the threshold into the main expanse."
Through an iterative and collaborative process with client and builder, the team maintained clear vision of the original concept, while ensuring stringent bushfire protection measures were complied with.
Two distinct forms nestle together amongst the trees, oriented to engage with its surrounds at the discretion of its occupants. Traditional slate tiles wrap the pitched portal frame of the main living zone.
"Deliberately simpler in form and maintaining a select material palette, the guest wing is inward looking, low and muted, allowing light and shadow to express the outside landscape"
The cabin-life form is punctuated by clean contemporary dormer windows, both materiality and form in constant tension, strengthening the juxtaposition between contemporary and traditional at the core of the home’s concept.
A home for living, the interior evokes a sense of welcome through a warm, natural material palette and spaces which embrace the occupants.
