Ormond House
Ormond House transforms a Californian Bungalow into a contemporary Australian family home offering retreat style living as an everyday ritual.
"The desire for connection to nature is felt throughout the entire home."
Upon entry, you are drawn through the heritage home towards framed views to expansive garden. A central courtyard opens to the north, separating old from new. Efficient, functional spatial planning creates moments of surprise and joy, affording garden views from every aperture.
The extension strategically follows the southern boundary, allowing expansive outlook to the north with extensive glazing, protected by deep and exaggerated eaves. High level windows to the south maximise warm, ambient lighting in living areas and provide opportunity for natural cross ventilation.
Thoughtful upcycling of existing materials honours the building's heritage, while the elevated pavilion employs a warm yet durable palette to enhance and endure the demands of everyday life.
Taking cues from modernist design, the extension floats above the garden, gradually elevating as you move through the home. The sense of retreat is enhanced the moment you step down into the garden from the raised interior living spaces.
